: The Syrah clones 877, 174 and 7 were harvested from steep hillside blocks of the Purisima Mountain Vineyard. These grapes were 100% destemmed and lightly crushed, leaving approximately 60% whole berries, into a 1.5-ton open top fermentor and cold-soaked for five days prior to inoculation. This vineyard experiences a much warmer climate than most other Santa Barbara County vineyards and possesses iron rich, nutrient deprived soils. This results in Syrah with tiny berries, small clusters and very concentrated flavors. The 2005 Syrah Roasted Slope is dark and brooding in color, with complex aromas of black cherry, spices, and white pepper, toasty oak and candied violets (from the Viognier). This could be the last of its kind so be sure to get some before it is all gone. "Roasted Slope" is the direct translation of "Cote Rotie", one of the most famous vineyards in all of France, where Syrah and Viognier are allowed/encouraged to grow together in the same vineyards.
